LED Light Therapy

What is LED light therapy?

Light-emitting diode (LED) therapy uses a specific wavelength of light for a short interval of time. These infrared rays of light penetrate into the skin and trigger the biological process that helps the skin to rejuvenate and heal. LED light therapy can be used for acne treatment, sun damage, scarring, wound healing and aging.

What does LED light therapy do?

LED light therapy is basically infrared light rays of different colours. These lights penetrate into the skin tissues at different levels and help in strengthening and repairing skin cells. It is a non-invasive technique that does not use ultraviolet rays for treatment, therefore they don't cause burns or pain. The American Academy of Dermatology has approved this technique as safe for use.

Uses of LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy is used to treat many skin-related issues and diseases. It can:

  • Reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Improve acne and scars.
  • Reduce inflammation.
  • Brighten the skin.
  • Heal wounds.
  • Treat eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
  • Treats sun damage.
  • Be used as an anti-aging treatment.

Types of Lights and their Effects

Depending upon the wavelength of the light spectrum, the colour of the emitting light is different and it penetrates into the skin at different levels. Different lights have different effects on the skin.

  • Red Light

Red light is used to treat the epidermis, which is the upper layer of the skin. When light rays fall on the skin, it stimulates the collagen proteins making the skin smoother and brighter. Red light is also used to reduce inflammation by increasing blood circulation.

  • Blue Light

Blue light acts on the sebaceous glands, which controls the amount of oil in the skin. Blue light targets oil-producing glands to control oil generation. It stimulates the production of oxygen radicals that kills acne-causing bacteria. Blue light is also used for healing wounds and sunburns.

How long does LED light therapy take to work?

Depending upon the skin damage, led light therapy treatment may vary. Each led light therapy treatment lasts for 20 minutes and may take up to 10 sittings to see the desired results.

Procedure at Home

LED light therapy devices are available in the form of masks or wands. You can apply them at home for several minutes in a session. Before using these devices at home, follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Personal protective equipment like eye covers and adequate skin coverage must be taken.
